How Billing Works

What Counts as a Message?

A message is counted when you publish it, regardless of:

  • Whether delivery succeeds
  • How many retries it takes
  • The message size (within plan limits)

Retries do not count as additional messages.

Bandwidth

Each plan includes 50 GB of outbound bandwidth per month. On Pro, bandwidth beyond 50 GB is billed at $0.05 per GB. Free plan requests are blocked if the 50 GB limit is reached.

Rate Limits

Free:

  • 100 requests/minute
  • 2,000 requests/hour

Pro:

  • 1,000 requests/minute
  • 50,000 requests/hour

Enterprise:

  • Unlimited

Cost Examples

Example 1: Small Startup

Usage: 150,000 messages/month

Cost on Pro:

  • 150,000 messages ÷ 200,000 = 0.75 units
  • Cost: 0.75 × $0.50 = $0.38/month

Example 2: Growing SaaS

Usage: 1,500,000 messages/month

Cost on Pro:

  • 1,500,000 ÷ 200,000 = 7.5 units
  • Cost: 7.5 × $0.50 = $3.75/month

Example 3: High-Volume Application

Usage: 15,000,000 messages/month

Cost on Pro:

  • 15,000,000 ÷ 200,000 = 75 units
  • Cost: 75 × $0.50 = $37.50/month

Cost Optimization Tips

1. Use Message Deduplication

Prevent duplicate messages from being processed:

await relay.messages.publish({
  url: 'https://api.example.com/webhook',
  body: { event: 'user.created', userId: '123' },
  deduplicationId: 'user-created-123',
});

2. Batch Messages When Possible

// One API call instead of many
await relay.messages.publishBatch(
  users.map(user => ({
    url: 'https://api.example.com/webhook',
    body: { event: 'user.created', userId: user.id },
  }))
);

3. Keep Messages Small

Only include the data your endpoint needs — store full objects in your database and reference them by ID.

4. Use Appropriate Retry Counts

// Critical path — use all available retries
await relay.messages.publish({
  url: 'https://critical-service.com/webhook',
  retries: 5,
});

// Non-critical — fewer retries
await relay.messages.publish({
  url: 'https://optional-service.com/notification',
  retries: 2,
});

  • You exceed 10,000 messages/month
  • You need more than 5 schedules, workflows, or URL groups

Pro → Enterprise When:

  • You need message sizes above 10 MB
  • You need HTTP timeouts above 2 hours
  • You need more than 5 retries
  • You need dedicated support or custom SLAs

Billing FAQ

How is billing calculated?

You’re billed based on the number of messages published each month, rounded up to the nearest 200k unit at $0.50 each.

What happens when the free plan limit is reached?

Messages are rejected with a 429 status code until the month resets. Upgrade to Pro to continue with pay-as-you-go billing.

Can I change plans mid-month?

Yes. Changes take effect immediately.

Do retries count as additional messages?

No. Retries are included in the original message.

Is there a minimum charge on Pro?

No. You only pay for what you use.
